Day 5 - Thursday, Aug. 06

WE LOVE DAWSON CITY!!!!
What a cool place! I think it's the most fun city we ever visited in Canada!
After a bucket “shower” in our environmentally friendly hostel, we headed downtown for the guided walking tour with Parks Canada. For one hour and half we could hear about the history of the place and its people, and visited inside important buildings such as the bank, post office and saloon. These places are normally closed, so that’s another reason to pay $6.30 for the guided tour.
In the afternoon we spent a couple of hours at the internet café, me updating this blog (takes a long time to upload pictures!) and Mike selling the house. YEP, we conditionally sold our house in Calgary. So bizarre that we did all the way from an internet café in Dawson City, Yukon, but we are glad did! Now we have to wait a week to see if the deal goes through.

But isn’t this place the centre of the gold rush? Well, Mike decided that he was going to give it a try and… BINGO! He found a tiny little piece of gold while panning in Bonanza River. It won’t make us rich, but surely it made Mike excited! It was hard to convince him to leave the place that make hundreds millionaires.
On the way back, still pretty excited with the discovery, Mike and I went to jeweler on Front St. to learn more about the yellow mineral. In the store the woman confirmed: Mike’s finding was gold!

From canadacool.com website:
This is one event that you'll never forget. Dawson does indeed have a famous drink called the Sour Toe Cocktail, which contains an actual alcohol-preserved human toe. No kidding. Head to the Sourdough Saloon at the Downtown Hotel and you can watch this strange ritual, or for $5 you can try the cocktail yourself and earn a certificate. This started in 1973 with what is said to be the toe of a miner, which had been amputated in the 1920's. To participate and earn the official certificate, the rule is 'You can drink it fast, you can drink it slow—But the lips have gotta touch the toe.' Find out more at http://www.canadacool.com/COOLFACTS/YUKON/DawsonSourToe.html##.

It’s a lot of fun! I am glad we did the Sour Toe Drinking Ceremony! The captain did and amazing time entertaining people from 9 to 11pm.

Since this was our last night in Dawson City we went back downtown for some more fun. We hung out at the Westminster Hotel, the oldest operating hotel in the Yukon and checked an awesome local band! The place is a dive, but with lost of character, of course. The building is literally falling apart and the decoration very unique. On the wall a picture of an RCMP officer “being taking care of by a woman” caught my attention as soon as I walked in the room. Christmas lights and portraits on the walls also contribute for the nice ambience. But the band was really the reason we decided to stay there for few beers. It was country, but with an east coast touch. Fantastic! The crazy thing happened in the break when I started to talk to Willy, the fiddle player, and after few minutes, I found out that he has worked for many years for CBC in Inuvik and that we have friends in common from CBC Yellowknife like Rassi, Paul Andrew and Lisa. What a small world!
From there we headed back to Jack London pub to drink the infamous Sour Toe.

We continued our bar hopping and ended up again at Diamond Tooth Gertie's, the casino, for the midnight show. At this time the beer cost only $3.25 for a pint. We hung out with our German friends Mathias, Frank and Rhino (actually his name is something impossible to pronounce, but because of his size I decided after few beers to call him Rhino) and also we met Silvia and Talvino, the couple we met yesterday in Takhini, from Brazil. Well, the night ended at a hot dog stand, after we got kicked out of the casino after 2am, with our friend Nicky from Cambridge, Ontario. Nicky was wild! We had tons of fun with her and hopefully we will meet her again in Toronto when she leaves Dawson City after the summer.

Tomorrow we are heading up to Alaska.
Stay tuned!
