Brazil 2026 - Florianópolis miscellaneous (March 17-24)

A lovely suggestion for food and beach is the Barra da Lagoa Beach, on the east of the Island of Santa Catarina (Florianópolis City).

We enjoyed a delicious and affordable seafood lunch at the Canal da Barra.

FROM WIKIPEDIA: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barra_da_Lagoa
Barra da Lagoa is a small fishing village in the city of FlorianópolisSanta Catarina, Brazil. The village is set on the mouth of a tidewater channel that flows in and out of the Island's sizable lagoon, the Lagoa da Conceição. The channel is at the end of a long beach made up of Praia Barra da Lagoa (English:Barra da Lagoa Beach) and Mozambique Beach which form a single 14 km stretch of beach.

Every year I get a cab downtown to meet up with some of my university friends.
The drive along Beira Mar Norte during sunset is always mesmerizing.

Friends since 1993 or for 33 years!

It's so good to have such awesome girlfriends.
I am very lucky to have had these (and others) amazing and strong women in my life for so long!

Shopping at our favourite Brazilian store: Farm Rio

This is my girls favourite Brazilian fast food: Giraffas.
Pretty much every plate comes with rice and beans and salad.

Açaí with banana and granola.

A day on the beach with my bestie and her son.

We have been laughing this much since 1990, or for 36 years!
Now our children laugh with us!

Dea, te amo!

Another must do attraction is the sunset at Santo Antonio de Lisboa, in the north of the island.

A tour unlike any other, unmissable and full of charm. We'll enjoy the best sunset on the island while sampling typical oysters and a traditional drink like caipirinha in the unique and unforgettable Santo Antônio de Lisboa, the second Portuguese settlement.
Considered one of the best places to visit on the island, it's full of culture, cuisine, leisure, and beautiful scenery.
Tourists are drawn to the neighborhood for its well-preserved Azorean architecture, notably the local church from 1750 and the houses listed as public heritage.

Us.

This is so adorable, isn't it?

Downtown Florianópolis is also another island gem.
Here is the Cathedral.

FROM WIKIPEDIA:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Exile_and_St._Catherine_of_Alexandria_Cathedral,_Florian%C3%B3polis

It is a Catholic church dedicated to Our Lady of the Exile, which functions as the cathedral of the archdiocese of Florianópolis, since its creation on March 19, 1908. The building is protected by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute of Brazil.
The definitive colonization of Florianópolis began in 1673. In 1679, Francisco Dias Velho required the legal title of the lands, beginning the construction of a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It was small and built with limestone. Inside it, the founder of Desterro (today Florianópolis) was assassinated. In 1908 it was elevated to the condition of Cathedral.

One of Florianópolis symbols, the centenary Fig Tree, or Figueira.

The story tells that Figueira Centenária de Florianópolis was born in 1871 in the garden of Igreja Matriz, current Cathedral, and that it was transplanted 20 years later to the place where it is in Praça XV.
According to local folklore, whoever surrounds it several times will attract wealth, luck and marriage.

This is Felipe Schmidt street, one of the main commercial streets downtown.
It has a special meaning for me because my grandma lived just up the street for the last 30 years of her life. Her sister, who got to live to 104 years old, lived her ENTIRE life on Felipe Schmidt street!
The street was empty and the stores were closed because it was Florianópolis 353 anniversary - therefore a city holiday.

Art crafts everywhere.

A replica of the already iconic The Secret Agent  (film) public phone, orelhão.

To finish in great style, we lucked out and encountered two amazing creatures in a creek, right across from a shopping mall (Iguatemi).

Here is one of the three alligators we saw.

And a very friendly capybara!

What a treat!
