Last day in NYC - Monday May 21

We could not have left the Big Apple without seeing her. So, we used our last 4 hours in the city to go see the Statue of Liberty.

Here is a tip for someone who doesn't want to spend money just for a photo with the symbol of NYC and often the United States.
Take the subway all the way downtown to South Ferry, where you can catch a FREE ride on the Staten Island Ferry. It runs each way every 30 minutes (or less at some times of the day) and it takes you right beside the most famous NYC lady.

The Statue of Liberty was a joint effort between France and the United States, intended to commemorate the lasting friendship between the peoples of the two nations. The French sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi created the statue itself out of sheets of hammered copper, while Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, the man behind the famed Eiffel Tower, designed the statue’s steel framework. The Statue of Liberty was then given to the United States and erected atop an American-designed pedestal on a small island in Upper New York Bay, now known as Liberty Island, and dedicated by President Grover Cleveland in 1886. Over the years, the statue stood tall as millions of immigrants arrived in America via nearby Ellis Island; in 1986, it underwent an extensive renovation in honor of the centennial of its dedication. Today, the Statue of Liberty remains an enduring symbol of freedom and democracy, as well as one of the world’s most recognizable landmarks.

The day was absolutely perfect for a boat ride.

View of South Manhattan skyline.

On the way there we took a spot on the wrong side of the ferry full of cheap tourists like us, and we missed the whole thing all together. On the way to Staten Island the right is the best side.  And left side on the way back.
As soon as we got off the ferry on Staten Island, we rushed to get another ferry, now going back to Manhattan. This time on the right side.

And there she was.
Statue of liberty, checked.
That was not the reason why we came all the way to NYC, so we were just happy to see her and to get a free boat ride.

Us and Miss Liberty back there.

Back in Manhattan, close to 34th Street, we were rushing to get the last minute shopping done and have a quick bite to eat. Burger did the job (of course!) and we were back to the hotel by 2pm to get out luggage and start our adventurous journey to Newark airport: walk about 10 blocks to Penn Station, get a train to New Jersey (3 stops) and get the AirTrain to the airport (another 3 stops).

Mission accomplished.
A pint of beer to celebrate such an amazing trip, while waiting for our flight back to Canada.
Bye NYC!
